Last year a survey (CBI/Accenture Employment Trends Survey 2014) was completed by 323 senior executives from businesses employing more than 1.5 million people collectively. The results have now been published.

Some key findings include:

  • Businesses have reported a drop in the number of employment tribunal claims, with 23% receiving claims in 2014, down from 39% in 2013.
  • Despite a reduction in the number of employment tribunal claims, 73% of businesses found that the time taken to resolve them had stayed the same or increased.
  • 23% of firms are uncertain about how best to manage the retirement of older employees, following the abolition of the default retirement age.
  • 61% of respondents felt the burden of employment regulation was the greatest threat to the UK’s competitiveness as a place to employ people.

stress at work

Employment law remains a difficult area for businesses to deal with. Whilst many companies try to save money and address issues themselves it often means that it takes longer to conclude matters and/or ultimately costs more money. The key to employment law issues is to address them straight away, have a good paper trail and take expert advice from people who understand your business.
