More apprenticeships to be available – Conservative Conference 2014.
This year’s conservative conference has been beset by defections sex scandals and the ‘resignation’ of William Hague. However in amongst this there has been a few nuggets that may help business.
The news that the Conservatives will increase the number of apprenticeships available by reducing welfare payments may not be greeted with enthusiasm in some quarters, but it should be a solid step towards increasing employment and reducing the amount of youngsters on the dole. I am a great supporter of apprenticeships, not all or them work out of course, but a good percentage do and once someone has had some training and been in the workforce they must be more likely to stay in employment. Premier Legal has links with several colleges and can provide advice on all sorts of apprenticeships. While you are training an apprentice the wage that they have to receive under the NMW is very low, from 01 October 2014 it is £2.73, so having an extra pair of hands needn’t break the bank. If you also consider the £1,500 grant that is paid if you take on an apprentice the cost is even less. If you happen to have a Birmingham postcode and you take on an apprentice that may also be a further £1,500 available from the council.
If you decide to take on an apprentice you will need to have an Apprenticeship Agreement with them, this differs slightly from a normal set of employment terms and conditions and is a legal requirement under the Apprenticeships, Skills, Children and Learning Act 2009.
Premier Legal can provide all the information you need with regard to taking on an apprentice, as well as introduction to the Apprenticeship Advisers at several colleges.
